Sally Kipyego is back again after the BAA 10K, she needs some time to fly

Sally Kipyego with daughter, Emma after BAA 10K
Olympic and world silver medalist, Sally Kipyego has been out of the limelight for a while now in matters running. She had been on a maternity leave and is now back to running again after her daughter, Emma now turns roughly 1 year. Her time of 34:31 which she ran to finish 10th, doesn't sound so impressive to everyone who knows her potential, but is understandable when she explains the circumstances leading up to the particular race.

Kipyego has been a runner-up to legendary athletes in her major championship races: She took silver medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games, behind the legendary Tirunesh Dibaba in the women 10,000m. Before that, at the 2011 IAAF World Athletics Championships, she was the silver medalist in the 10,000 m, finishing second to none other than her compatriot and legendary Vivian Cheruiyot. In 2016, she finished as a runner-up in 2:28:01 at the New York City Marathon behind another legendary runner, Mary Keitany who won it in 2:24:26.

She has had an impressive career at the collegiate level which is an indication that she is capable of achieving much more in her running career. She became the first Kenyan woman to win a NCAA cross country individual title in 2006, was the first Texas Tech Big 12 XC Champ and only female to ever win 3 Big 12 Conference cross country titles in 2006, 2007 and 2008. She won three consecutive Honda Sports Awards from 2007, 2008 and 2009, just to name but a few of some of her achievements.

Her professional career began in 2010. In January 2017, she became a U.S. citizen.

“Today I competed for the first time since having Emma. I finished 10th in 34:31 at the BAA 10K . To finish 2 mins behind the winner might seem like a disappointment but funny enough, I'm actually happy about it. Alot has happened this past week, Emma got sick upon arrival..got admitted and had to spend time at the hospital. Then a few days later I got my 2nd flu in a month which I'm yet to get over it....And that's why today was a success for me. All in all our visit to Boston didn't start well but at the end we had alot of fun. Now heading back to the mountains to get ready for a fall marathon. All I need is time to fly again!” She posted in her FaceBook time line after her first major race since her maternity leave.
